Play This! Podcast - Episode 12

New Episode is up!

Our good friend Damon Brown is back in the studio with us again to geek out about movies, music, tv, and games. Carlos was sick last week, so he's got a lot of pent-up stuff to talk about. Apparently, Jason has to see Drive, because he's not in on all the cultural references. Also on the docket today, a discussion about the best video game soundtracks.

Links from this week's episode:

  • Jason's got a problem with Hulu Plus. Namely, the annoyingly high volume of commercials on this high-tier pay service.
  • Hotline Miami is a hard, uber-violent puzzle game. With amazing music. Check out the soundtrack on SoundCloud.
  • The soundtrack for Halo 4 debuted higher up on the Billboard charts than any other game soundtrack ever. Is it the best of all time? Maybe not. Baba Yetu, from Civilization IV, is the only song composed for a game to ever win a Grammy. It's worth a listen.
  • The parody twitter account Peter Molydeux is at least partly responsible for Peter Molyneux forming a new company, whose first product is the really unusual experiment Curiosity.
  • Carlos wants everyone to go grab Ultima VII from GOG. He's been playingUltima IX, which is neat, but not as good as VII.
  • Assassin's Creed III is good, but Carlos has some real problems with the artificial intelligence.
  • Damon and Jason are enjoying Letterpress, but Alex really isn't into these sort of word games.
  • Alex is really into The Silent History, a new way of serializing a novel on mobile devices that ties into your location.
  • Go check out Carlos' Kickstarter side project, Everybody Game.

BYOT Podcast Episode 6

Click image to go to there

Was recently a guest on the Gamesbeat podcast BYOT. My buddy Dan Hsu hosted and brought on Tara Long (Destructoid) and Greg Miller (IGN) to complete the trio of awesome. I brought a six pack and we had a great beer spilling conversation.

The Kickstarter project I mentioned in the show is not QUITE up yet. We're waiting on some payment verification stuff to get completed. Check HERE for updates!

It's double the Alex fun this week, as Alex Cocilova joins Jason, Carlos, and DJ A-dubs to talk about storming the Tokyo Jungle. If you don't want to play as a Pomeranian struggling to survive in a future Tokyo overrun with wild beasts, you can always watch the excellent fan film Left 4 Dead - The Movie, or run over the undead hordes in Earn to Die. If you're a fan of LCD Soundsystem, Carlos thinks you're love the documentary Shut Up and Play the Hits.

Links from this week's episode:

  • Alex Wawro has can't stop talking about how great Tokyo Jungle is.
  • Other Alex wants you to watch Left 4 Dead - The Movie, especially Part 3.
  • Run over zombies, upgrade your car, and do it all over again in Earn to Die.
  • A mere $5 will get you the fantastic rotoscoped Jordan Mechner adventure game The Last Express
  • Don't trust the screenshots for FTL, they do't do the game justice. Just pick it up for your PC or Mac. You won't be sorry.
  • If you always wanted to play Star Trek bridge crew, with you and your friends each manning a single station, you'll be interested in Artemis.
  • Fans of LCD Soundsystem should watch Shut Up and Play the Hits, a nifty documentary about their last show.
  • The Kickstarter for Blackspace is worth looking at. It's a 3D Lunar Lander with tower defense elements, or something.
  • Boardwalk Empire is fantastic, but what's the deal with HBO Go only being available if you have HBO through your cable company?
  • Save Toshi DX is really weird.
  • Don't forget to send us your songs! Download iAmBeatBoxFigure, or another easy music-making app, and send us a link (no files, please) to your creation. Just mail us with the subject "Play This podcast", and mention the app you used. We'll feature the best ones on the air in a couple weeks.
